Mining Industry

In the mining industry, valuable minerals or other geological materials is extracted from earth often in the form of an ore body, lode, vein, seam, or reef. Ores extracted include metals, coal, limestone, dimension stone, oil shale, clay, gemstones, potash, rock salt, and gravel. Mining is required to obtain any material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes or created artificially by laboratory efforts. In a wider sense, Mining includes extraction of any non-renewable resource which also comprises of petroleum, natural gas and even water.

Industry and Megatrends

In the mineral refining process, valuable minerals are concentrated by removing unnecessary substances from the excavated rock material. The first part involves reducing the size of the mineral and this is achieved using crushers and grinding mills where the ore is fragmented down into smaller pieces. Once the ore fragments are reduced to suitable small portions, the pieces containing the most valuable minerals are separated.

The separation process involves leaching, gravity, emission methods and magnetic separation. Some of the apparatus and equipment used in the separation process are emission chambers and pipes, coils and magnetic separation equipment. Water is also required to be extracted from the concentrated product and this is attained using coils, filters, thickeners, sedimentation basins and dryers. The remaining process includes milling, grinding, pyrometallurgyelectrometallurgy and refining through the use of heat, chemicals and electricity.

Due to the intensive processing conditions, the components are subjected to high wear, high temperatures and erosion. Replacement of these components is far too expensive and hence, they are usually repaired.

Dura-Metal supported the industry with the introduction of hardfacing technologies via welding and thermal spray methods. The aim of hardfacing is to improve the profiles of the components while preserving their efficiency in the production conditions at the same time. The commonly applied materials include iron-based, copper-based, cobalt-based alloys, nickel-based alloys, chromium & tungsten carbide alloys and Nano-Structure alloys. In addition, Dura-Metal plays a vital role in the joint development of equipment parts for the various Mining industry’s applications.
